Today 25th June 2020, Seven LDUs and one civilian have been sentenced by the UPDF 1st infantry Division court martial. These were accused of beating up citizens during the enforcement of presidential directives on COVID-19.

The sentenced LDUs included Bango Godfrey, Lumansi Paul, Onyango Boaz, all of Kampala central battalion and Mulenzi Emmanuel, Niyagaba Benson and Okolongo Grievance of Kawempe battalion, while in Kampala and Kawempe divisions beat up civilians on the 26th and 30th march 2020
This went against the laws of Uganda under section 119 of the penal code act.

These appeared before a five member court team under the chairmanship of Col Sam Mugyenyi.

The 6 were found guilty and sentenced to 2 months each in detention as a punishment to the crimes that they committed.

The seventh LDU Mulaalo Rashid was charged of desertion and common assault. He was convicted on the second count and sentenced to 6 months imprisonment. Court could not hear the first charge, since hearing of a capital offence required the presence of the 7 member quorum.

All the 7 sentenced LDUs have 14 days to appeal to the court ruling.
