Former Kenya President Kibaki dies at 90

Kenyatta also directed that Kenyan flag to be flown at half-mast beginning today until Kibaki who led the country between 2002 and 2013 is buried.

The former Kenyan President, Mwai Kibaki, has died at the age of 90.

His death was announced Friday by President Uhuru Kenyatta, who said his passing was a sad day for the country and praised his predecessor as a great Kenyan and a statesman.

“As a leading figure in Kenya’s post-independence history, his excellency Mwai Kibaki earned the abiding respect and affection of the people of this nation and other nations throughout the world,” Kenyatta said in a televised address to the nation.

Kibaki was in and out of hospitals in recent years as his health failed but the cause of his death was not given,

“Mwai Kibaki will forever be remembered as a gentleman in Kenyan politics, a brilliant debater and one who steered development in the country,” Kenyatta said, declaring a period of mourning until his funeral is held.

Kibaki served two terms as president of the East African country, ruling from 2002 to 2013.

He studied at Uganda’s Makerere University, where his teachers remembered him as a brilliant economics student. He continued his studies at the London School of Economics.

Before winning the presidency in 2002, he had run for the top political job twice and lost.
