While addressing the country on measures of controlling the novel Corona virus epidemic, the president of Uganda H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni closed a number of businesses and called upon workers to stay home.

During this time, the biggest population could not work and this led to their inability to clear most of their Bill’s forcing the president to talk about the issue of rent and asked all landlords to give their tenants a grace period of at least 3 months since they were not at work.

This didn’t stop most of the landlords from demanding for their rent money and just because Amos Ssuubi, aged 23, a resident of Senyange A village Masaka Municipality couldn’t pay his rent in time, the landlord decided to set his house on fire burning him from inside.

“I was sleeping in the house, when flames filled the house, waking up, the house was on fire and on trying to get out, my hands, legs and mouth got burnt” he explains.

The landlord, whose name is withheld was demanding only May rent and when Ssuubi asked for a grace period until when he gets back to work, he instead started threatening him on how he could set his house on flames until when he did it.

A case has been opened up against the landlord who was identified as an army reservist and investigations have kicked off to curb the hiding landlord.
