The UPDF have successfully eliminated a middle-level ADF commander known as Fazul, who had been active in the Mwalika Valley region on thursday this week.
This comes under Operation Shujaa, a collaborative effort between the Uganda Peoples’ Defense Forces (UPDF) and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC).

According to Major Bilal Katamba, the Public Information Officer of the Mountain Division/Operation Shujaa, Fazul, a Tanzanian national, met his demise alongside another ADF fighter in the general vicinity of Alungupa within the North Kivu Province.
Additionally, in a related event that occurred on Wednesday, August 24, 2023, the joint forces, specifically the UPDF 3 Mountain Battalion, carried out a successful operation in the Kanana area of Makisabo, North Kivu Province.
During this mission, two ADF combatants were neutralized, and the joint forces were able to seize two submachine guns (SMGs), four magazines, 84 rounds of ammunition, and a military radio.
Major Katamba emphasized that the collective effort of these forces persists in relentlessly pursuing the terrorists, seeking them out from all corners of the dense jungles they hide in. It’s notable that amidst these actions, there’s an appeal being made to ADF fighters to surrender.
Those who choose to do so would be eligible for the amnesty offered by the Ugandan government, which is still valid for those who decide to renounce their participation in the rebellion.
The operation’s success follows a heightened campaign by Operation Shujaa that began in November 2021. The operation’s primary focus was on dismantling the ADF terror group, held responsible for a series of bomb attacks and raids that affected both Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
This ongoing initiative hasn’t only resulted in the elimination of key commanders but has also led to the apprehension of various fighters and the liberation of individuals who had been abducted by the ADF.
