This information comes from a letter dated August 18, 2023, sent by his legal representatives at Kayanja & Co advocates to Dorothy Kisakka, the Executive Director of KCCA.
Copies of the same letter were sent to Speaker Anita Among, Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, and the Kampala Affairs Minister.
The letter explains, “Due to the injuries sustained, he is currently unable to fulfill his duties and responsibilities as a member of parliament.
We thus kindly request that you address the issue of open manholes in the city center and provide compensation of 25,000,000 UGX to our client to cover the injury and inconvenience caused, or else we will initiate legal proceedings against you.”
Speaking to New Vision Online on a Saturday, Kafeero Ssekitoleko shared that the incident took place around 10:00 AM on Thursday, August 17, 2023.
Ssekitoleko, who serves on the Government Assurances Committee responsible for overseeing unfulfilled presidential commitments, recounted that he fell into the manhole while lawfully crossing the road at Garden City.
The manhole, located in the middle of a pedestrian crossing, was not easily noticeable. He suffered a leg injury and underwent surgery.
He was immediately admitted to ABII clinic in Wandegeya. “I’m currently on medication and have been advised to take a two-week leave from work due to the stitches in my leg,” he stated.
Following treatment, Ssekitoleko attended a parliamentary session wearing open shoes, which led observers to question if the dress code for MPs had been relaxed.
A medical report from Dr. Posiano Baguma, a specialist radiologist, confirms that Ssekitoleko sustained an injury but noted that “the soft tissues are preserved, and the knee and proximal tibia-fibula joint appear normal.”
