Five individuals suspected of involvement in the alleged theft of 30 million shillings from a mobile money agent in Kabwoya sub-county, Kikuube district have been apprehended by the Police’s Flying Squad.
The operation successfully led to the arrest of Emmanuel Katerega, Brian Atuheire, David Mbazira, Benon Sekimpi, and Gerald Safari.
The incident occurred on October 31, 2023, at approximately 10:30 pm in Kikonda trading centre, Bubogo parish, Kabwoya sub-county, Kikuube. The victim, Moreen Tungu, recounted her encounter with the robbers to the police. Initially posing as clients conducting a mobile money transaction, the suspects later brandished firearms and demanded the money. Despite her initial resistance, the assailants threatened her life, compelling her to surrender the funds. Subsequently, the robbers fled the scene with the money, leaving her unharmed. Tungu managed to identify some of the suspects and promptly reported the incident to the police.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region Police spokesperson, revealed that a team of Flying Squad operatives swiftly responded to the situation, arresting the five suspects. They are currently detained at Kikuube Central Police Station, facing charges of aggravated robbery. Investigations are ongoing, with the recovery of the firearm used in the robbery still pending.
Hakiza issued a warning to mobile money agents in the region, urging them to exercise increased vigilance during transactions, especially throughout the festive season, as they remain susceptible to criminal targeting. This incident follows a previous armed robbery in April, where Prisca Kemigisa, the wife of John Mukonyezi, the owner of a beer depot in Ngogoli trading centre, Kyangwali parish, Kyangwali sub-county, Kikuube district, was shot and injured by unidentified assailants.
