The spokesperson of the Uganda Prisons Service Frank Baine Mayanja has rubbished allegations that the Karamoja Affairs Minister Dr. Mary Goretti Kitutu who was yesterday remanded to Luzira women’s prison is being treated like VIP inside their precincts.
Speaking at a radio interview this Friday morning, Baine stated that Dr. Mary Goretti Kitutu is not the first high profile prisoner to be detained at Luzira neither is she the last.
“I have seen some people saying we have not given her our yellow uniform simply because she is a Minister. That’s all hogwash. With us, once you are here you are a prisoner. There’s nothing like a VIP in prison,” Baine said. “We have a had a former Vice President (Gilbert Bukenya) in our custody, we have had several opposition politicians. Even the most recent are Members of Parliament (Hon. Ssewanyana and Hon. Ssegirinya),” he added.
Baine also says the Prisons Service do not release inmates without the approval of Courts. This concern came after some people alleged that Dr. Kitutu, given her status as a Minister may have been chauffeured to a hotel or her residence.
“Please disregard claims that the Minister is in a hotel or her home. For us, we treat everyone equally. Once the courts have surrendered you to us, we admit you as an inmate and give you a number,” he said.
