Michael Koyi, a resident, recounted that the stakes were set at Shs 10,000 for anyone who could successfully consume the specified quantity. Despite the event proceeding smoothly until Welikhe reached the 8th bottle, a sudden turn of events took place. He collapsed, releasing foam from his mouth and nose. In a desperate attempt to save him, residents rushed Welikhe to Lwakhakha Mercy Clinic for treatment, but sadly, he passed away en route.
Nicolas Soita, Bukiabi sub-county LC III chairperson, confirmed the incident and expressed their intent to apprehend Wete and others involved in organizing the fatal challenge. Infuriated locals had already taken action by depositing Welikhe’s body at Wete’s residence by the time this report was filed.
