Parliamentary Speaker Anita Among has firmly stated that the request for 56 billion shillings by the local government ministry to conduct LC (Local Council) elections will not be approved.
She expressed her concerns about the exaggeration of figures and emphasized that Parliament will not be swayed by such inflated requests.

Among clarified that the requested amount goes beyond what is actually necessary to conduct the elections for LC chairpersons whose term of office expired on July 10, 2023.
She highlighted that the process of voting for LC1 involves a simple lining up behind a candidate, and thus, such a substantial sum of money is not warranted.
During the plenary session on Wednesday, Among urged for a more realistic assessment and revision of the budget to determine an appropriate and practical amount for the LC1 elections.
The local government minister, Raphael Magyezi, suggested extending the term of the current office holders until funds are mobilized for a fresh election.

However, this proposal faced challenges from some legislators and lawyers as there is no legal provision for extending their terms beyond the expiration date.
Currently, there are 10,595 LC2 chairpersons and 70,626 LC1 chairpersons nationwide, who are unable to perform their duties legally since their term has expired, and they cannot sign or transact any official business.
