Two Pilgrims have lost their lives in a fatal accident as they made their way to Namugongo for Martyrs day celebrations. The incident occurred in the early hours of 1st June 2023.
According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, the accident took place at St. Lawrence Nakati on the Kampala-Masaka highway. It involved a UAL 881Z Isuzu bus owned by Perfect Company and two pedestrians identified as Nabakooza Oliva and Nambi Specioza, both from Makondo Parish in Masaka Diocese.
Preliminary reports indicate that the incident occurred around 3:00 AM. Allegedly, while traveling downhill from the Nsangi direction, the driver of the UAL 881Z Isuzu bus lost control of the vehicle, veered from his lane, and tragically collided with the two pilgrims who were on their way to participate in the upcoming Martyrs Day celebrations scheduled for June 3, 2023, in Namugongo, as stated by Owoyesigyire, the deputy spokesperson for the KMP.
The bodies of the deceased were respectfully taken to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examinations, Owoyesigyire further added.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus driver fled the scene immediately after disembarking from the bus, fearing a possible mob attack.
In response to the growing number of accidents, bishops and clerics have called upon the police to consider deploying additional personnel to accompany pilgrims on their journey to Namugongo.
