According to Mr. Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, the individual in question was seen holding a pistol, and the authorities have obtained images of the incident.
Law enforcement and intelligence agencies are actively investigating to identify the person and determine how they acquired the firearm. It remains uncertain whether this individual is affiliated with the National Unity Platform (NUP) party or is an outsider.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of attendees at Bobi Wine’s rallies. Mr. Enanga emphasized the potential dangers of possessing a firearm in a crowd or political gathering, highlighting the need for collaboration with the police and security forces to ensure the safety of such events.
Additionally, Mr. Enanga issued a caution regarding potential terrorist threats to Opposition political parties. He urged these parties to be vigilant as they travel across the country for campaign and mobilization activities.
He cited credible intelligence sources indicating a vulnerability during such events due to factors like slow-moving convoys, traffic disruptions, and the use of inexperienced private security personnel.
To enhance safety, Mr. Enanga recommended conducting meetings in town halls and enclosed settings with restricted access, where security agencies can better ensure the safety of participants.
He encouraged NUP leadership to work closely with district security committees to plan for comprehensive security measures.
This warning from the police follows the recent discovery of six unexploded Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the suburbs of Kampala, underscoring the need for heightened security awareness and measures in the region.
