On Thursday, July 13, President Yoweri Museveni is scheduled to deliver a national address focusing on matters of national importance, particularly security.
Faruk Kirunda, the Deputy Presidential Press Secretary, announced in a statement on Monday, July 10, that the address will commence at 8:00 pm and will be broadcasted live on all TV and radio stations.
The President’s decision to speak comes at a time when several significant events have unfolded in the country, particularly within the security sector.
One such event was the attack on May 26, where 54 UPDF soldiers lost their lives during an assault on an African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) forward operating base.
Additionally, just last month, the Lhubiriha secondary school in Mpondwe, Kasese District, fell victim to an attack by the Allied Democratic Forces, resulting in the tragic deaths of 42 students and locals.
During this incident, one injured individual subsequently passed away, while the body of a kidnapped local resident was discovered in the bushes as the army pursued the terrorists, who also abducted several students.
Furthermore, the President’s address follows his directive to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to investigate the violence that occurred during the June 14 by-election for the position of the district chairperson in Bukedea.
As a result, eight suspects, including the Resident District Commissioner, Wilberforce Tukei, and the District Police Commander, Charles Okoto, have been arrested.

Additionally, the President’s speech coincides with the recent loss of the Oyam North parliamentary by-election by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC).
Eunice Apio, the UPC candidate, emerged as the winner with 15,718 votes, representing 49.12% of the total votes cast.
