In connection with the murder, Felista Namaganda, her boyfriend Pastor Joseph Sselubiri of Healing and Deliverance Church in Market Cell, Kakira Town Council, and Pastor Isma Buyinza Ssekabira alias Israel were apprehended.
The three faced charges of aggravated trafficking and murder. Pastor Sselubiri was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and 30 years for trafficking in children after pleading guilty. Namaganda and Pastor Ssekabira chose to stand trial.
After a lengthy trial, Pastor Sselubiri was acquitted, while Namaganda was found guilty of aggravated trafficking and murder. She received 30 years for trafficking and a life sentence for murder, to be served concurrently.
In her ruling, Justice Winfred Nabisinde considered the circumstances surrounding the trafficking and the sacrificial intention. Namaganda, in her defense, denied involvement, claiming she was at her father’s shop on the day of the incident.
The state prosecutor sought the death penalty, while Namaganda’s defense lawyer requested 20 years, citing her role as a mother to a young child.
Justice Nabisinde emphasized the severity of the crime, considering the vulnerability of the innocent child who was unable to defend herself, stating that Namaganda abused the child’s trust.
