The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) are currently conducting an investigation into an incident where one of their soldiers allegedly opened fire, resulting in the indiscriminate killing of 18 animals and the injury of over 20 others in Nakapiripirit District on a Sunday.
According to the acting 3rd division army spokesperson, Maj Moses Amuya, the soldier in question, Private Yofesi Baguma, is affiliated with the 3rd infantry division and was assigned to oversee the grazing of impounded cows. Unfortunately, he is said to have gone on a shooting spree at the Moruita protected kraal, using his firearm.

UPDF reported that 18 cows died on the spot, while 25 others were injured before the same security detail acted promptly to apprehend Private Baguma in connection with the incident.
This unfortunate event is linked to the impounding of 291 livestock on September 9, 23, from Naborokocha and Pian Upe Game Reserve, which are known raiding corridors. This action was taken in response to the killing of a UPDF officer and two other soldiers in August 2023.
Maj Amuya pointed out that while preliminary investigations suggest that Private Baguma might have experienced severe mental distress, he will undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause of his actions.
UPDF also informed the media that some of the affected animals had been designated for compensation to the victims of deadly raids often carried out by armed cattle rustlers.
The UPDF leadership in the region has emphasized that the incident was unintentional, and they are fully committed to conducting a thorough investigation. They intend to delve into all aspects of the matter.
Additionally, Maj Amuya revealed that, as the pressure mounted in their operation against the criminals responsible for killing the soldiers, at least three guns were recovered, seven suspects were arrested, and 38 exhibit cows were found.
