Scovia Akankunda, a regular attendee of Depths Ministries Church, tragically took her own life by poisoning after Pastor Daniel Bukenya allegedly failed to repay a borrowed sum of Shs 16 million.
The incident led to a tense situation in Ibanda municipality, where police had to use force against agitated Christians attempting to vandalize the church located in Kafunjo cell, Bufunda Division.

Colman Mulonde, the LC I chairperson of Kafunjo cell, revealed that Akankunda lent the money to the pastor with the understanding that it would be repaid within two months.
The protesters not only expressed their discontent over Akankunda’s death but also called for action against the church, citing noise pollution and the allegations against Bukenya.
Amidst the turmoil, Emily Musiimenta, a vendor at Ssaza market, claimed that Pastor Bukenya had been soliciting money from women in the market, promising to provide prayer services to remove curses and protect their businesses from negative influences.
Samson Kasasira, the police spokesperson for Rwizi Region, confirmed an ongoing search for Pastor Bukenya as investigations continue. The deceased’s body is currently at Ruhoko health center IV, awaiting a postmortem examination to confirm the cause of death, addressing the claims that Akankunda took her own life using poison.
