The Ugandan Daily has always shared experiences some political activists go through and how far they go to add a brick or two to the parties that they belong to.
Today we share a story of Fatuma Sserunkuma a resident of Kiiti Kyadondo who is even lost her life due to her public support towards NUP.
The story was compiled by her close friend who asked us not to disclose her name to the public.
She says that Fatuma joined the National Unity Platform in 2020 in its early stages mainly because of the democratic principles that composed the party.
“Unlike NRM, NUP doesn’t use money to convince people with differing political ideas to either join them or stay silent.” Fatuma’s friend told The Ugandan daily while giving reasons as to why her friend joined NUP.
Robert Kyagulanyi first became a member of parliament of Kyadondo Constituency on an independent ticket but later on came up with National Unity Platform, a party that he later used to stand for Uganda’s Presidency position.
“Fatuma, being a resident of Kyandondo and a diehard of Robert Kyagulanyi joined the party (NUP) and later on became a campaign agent for Kyagulanyi.” Her friend adds on.
This was done until the end of elections that were held in January 2021.
Unfortunately the results weren’t in favor of NUP as the party lost the Presidential seat to the incumbent who stands to be NRM’s Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Fatuma’s activism didn’t end here as she continued with all the works that aimed to benefit her party even if she wasn’t earning any money from it and with time she even inspired her son Kagimu Hamza who was formerly an NRM supporter to also join NUP.
It is believed that she always publically aired out her political affiliation to the together with her son whenever she could get a chance to and wherever she could go to.
She got involved in many other political activities and happened to meet many other NUP leaders that helped nurture and groom her into better political activist.
As any other activist, Fatuma was doing all this in fear of the NRM and she always received random threatening messages and calls on various occasions.
According to her friend, the messages and calls were coming from unidentified numbers and sometimes they would ask her the amount of money she needed to turn herself in and change her support to the ruling party (NRM) but she kept on turning down all these offers.
The friend further says that these people told her friend that she had two options to either join them (NRM) or stay silent as she could lose her life but she kept on with supporting NUP.
Fatuma was later on murdered in cold blood by unknown people who attacked her with pangas while at home.

According to her friend, Fatuma might have been murdered due to her political affiliation.
Her death comes in a time when even her son Kagimu Hamza had just crossed from NRM to NUP.
